Dallas, Texas - Park Cities Baptist Church Gym<br /><br /><br />*BFSW Texas All Stars (Granny Globetrotters) weekly practice<br /><br /><br />.............And who shows up for practice? Good guess! None other than Big Easy and Flight Time of the Harlem Globetrotters (and recent contestants on the Amazing Race)......along with a host of reporters and media types from all the major networks and newspapers, etc.<br /><br />(Shown in Photo: Betty Epie, Betty Alexander, Barbara Legg, Kay Seamayer<br />"Big Easy", Laurie McGee, Carol Duncan, Jean Yates, "Flight Time" )<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The Basketball and Fitness for Senior Women Granny Globetrotters have had an ongoing "love affair" with the Globetrotters for quite some time. How long you say? Well for starters, 51 years ago, Kay Lewis Seamayer (now 70 years young and player/head coach of the group) played on a semi pro team, the Texas Bluebonnets out of Houston, Texas. They won the state title...and their big bonus prize was to meet and play a pre game exhibition in the Houston Coliseum prior to none other than...the HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS!<br /><br /><br /><br />Seamayer: "this was a huge thrill for me as basketball was one of my great passions growing up, especially since my dad coached high school girls basketball in Fannett, Texas on the Gulf Coast. I started playing basketball when the basketball was literally bigger than me...and began playing competitively very early in junior high, through high school, was offered a basketball scholarship, played on a semi pro team, then women's leagues through the years...and now... as a "senior" playing and coaching once again. So I grew up loving the Globetrotters. They are truly America's national and international sports ambassadors in my mind. I'd dare to say anyone who has ever watched them, or had the opportunity to look further in to what they bring to kids of all ages, is something wonderful to behold and remember! They awe and inspire everyone! And you never forget how wonderful the experience was!"<br /><br /><br /><br />Last year, we were special guests of the Globetrotters performance in Dallas at the American Airlines Center and were invited down on the court to meet the guys and take pictures. We're<br />thrilled to be invited guests again this year, 2010. Who knows, maybe we'll get to shoot a few three pointers with them!!<br /><br />Seamayer: "It was an awesome experience and one we've been talking about all year! As media director for our organization and group, lines of communication have remained open with the Globetrotters and when the call came "would you like to have the Globetrotters attend your practice session and scrimmage with you for a big media blitz?"...... well... things started to pop..<br />and since Tuesday was our regular practice day... we all got busy bringing it together.<br /><br />So.... we were thrilled to welcome the Globetrotters to our practice... They were so much fun and showed our "girls" some new tricks to add to our "Granny Globetrotter" halftime routine which we use at NBA, WNBA, colleges and high school games and events.<br /><br /><br /><br />Then, we got down to some serious 3 on 3 scrimmage, inviting them on the court to play with us. They were all too quick to admit that we taught them a few things! Well, more like SURPRISED them with the level of play "at our ages" we exhibited...that we could run and jump..that we could run plays...that we could shoot three pointers...and that we ran them around the court so much they had to borrow towels to wipe off the sweat!!...more than once!!! They told us they didn't run this hard playing full court in their games! And hey, we were all witnesses... we ran them pretty hard...and they felt it!!! We offered to share our fitness program with them...and that we gave 3 on 3 basketball lessons at Park Cities every Tuesday...and they were welcome to come bring the whole team.<br /><br /><br /><br />All in all.....it was a fabulous day for everyone...one never to be forgotten!! There was lots of media there who gave not only the Globetrotters, but all our girls a lot of attention, interviews and coverage.<br /><br /><br /><br />Who would have ever thought that in our late 50's, 60's and 70's we'd be enjoying life so much!<br /><br />Our thanks to the Harlem Globetrotter's players and staff, along with the Public Relations staff of the American Airlines Center......and all the media who showed up for this absolute fantastic experience! And thanks to all the tv stations and Dallas Morning News (DallasNews.com)<br />who have run wonderful features on the event.<br /><br /><br /><br />Contact Information for Granny Globetrotters: Kay Seamayer, President/Media Director,<br />Basketball and Fitness for Senior Women...Dallas, Texas. <a href="mailto:kayseamayer@MSN.com">kayseamayer@MSN.com</a><br />972.230.4980<br />Here are two TV Clips to view: WFAA - ABC Dallas - . The Granny Globetrotters were the special guests of the Harlem Globetrotters at the American Airlines Center - Dallas, Texas. This was a great treat<br />for those who attended the game and show. We got to meet many of the Globetrotters<br />and they were very surprised to know we were still playing basketball..(at our young/tender<br />ages!!) and taht we were playing in the Senior Olymics. They were very nice to us and took time to visit for some time.. Naturally, many of us got Globetrotter basketballs and had several of the players autograph them. <br /> <br /> Kay Seamayer, player/head coach, had a chance to share her story with the Globetrotter head coach about appearing in a pre game show of the Globetrotters in 1959 in the Houston Colliseum when she played on a State Championship AAU team.. the Texas Bluebonnets. This was the big prize for winning the championship.....a chance to perform on the same showbill as the HARLEM GLOBETOTTERS. And here Kay is again....50 years later!!! getting the chance to meet the Globetrotters once more.... however, the team members in 2009 could be some of the grandchildren of those greats so long ago...<br /><br /> Thanks to the Globetrotter organization for inviting us... We've got our bid in to perform in the 2010 Globetrotter show upon their return to Dallas. Move over, Harlem Globetrotters..the Granny Globetrotters are movin' in!!<br /><br /> This was a return visit to the American Airlines Center for the Granny Globetrotters where they played a halftime performance last year at a Dallas Mavericks game. <br /><div><a href="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/Globetrotters---jan-31-09-018-768437.jpg"></a><br /><br /><div></div></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7445506831180060227-8139201573395470316?l=www.kayseamayer.com%2Fteamannounce.htm' alt='' /></div>Kayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057725588702527748kayseamayer@msn.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445506831180060227.post-78720633553332354652009-02-01T07:52:00.000-08:002009-02-01T08:10:53.856-08:00Granny Globetrotters on Recruiting Mission....Plays Halftime Exhibitions at Rockwall HS...Heath HS<a href="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/Rockwall-High-School-Jan-09-730534.JPG"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/Rockwall-High-School-Jan-09-729782.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/Rockwall-High-School-Jan-09-730534.JPG"></a><br /> <br /><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/Heath-Jr.-High-----Jan-2009--7-8-grade-778604.JPG" border="0" /><br /><div></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7445506831180060227-7872063355333235465?l=www.kayseamayer.com%2Fteamannounce.htm' alt='' /></div>Kayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057725588702527748kayseamayer@msn.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445506831180060227.post-52238555655570048762009-01-03T05:01:00.000-08:002009-01-03T05:17:04.775-08:00Granny Globetrotter Wow Fans at Duncanville Holiday Sandra Meadows Classic<a href="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/Duncanville---Dec-30-Sandra-Meadows-005-788078.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/Duncanville---Dec-30-Sandra-Meadows-005-787499.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>The Granny Globetrotters once again wowed Duncanville fans at the annual Sandra Meadows Classic . </div><div> </div><div>Coach Seamayer: "We might have been a small group in numbers, but this bunch of sizzlin' seniors came out shootin' 3 pointers...doing our Granny Globetrotter routine and settin' the place on fire! Skills development is a huge part of the Hall of Famer's basic program for kids of all ages. We DID work hard.. and we, in most cases..... "held our own" alongside those much younger players. I was extremely proud of our ladies for trying so hard and doing soooo well.</p><p>Nancy handed me the mic and asked me to introduce our team mates... and tell the almost 200 participating campers more about our team... about our fitness and basketball program.. and about some of our experiences in the WNBA and NBA exhibition games and competitive tournaments in which we participated. </p><p>It was a great day for us... </p><p>Thank you, Nancy, for always including us... for making us feel not only welcome, but respected as well. </p><p>Nancy just was signed and played....at 50 years old!.... with the Detroit Shock.. in which she played two games.. She was credited with several assists. </p><p>THANKS AGAIN, NANCY for the opportunity to participate in your special summer camp. WE love you.. and thank you for all your great support of our our BFSW fitness and basketball program! </p><p></p><p>It's GREAT to see your love of the sport and love of helping others excel come together at these camps! Yours is a good heart who just happens to LOVE BASKETBALL...and is willing to help others who feel that same passion. All of the coaches you select seem to share this same level of enthusiasm and love of helping others. Having this opportunity to participate in this camp every year is something way more than SPECIAL to us all! The league started out with five women and has increased to 35. In an interview, Kay Seamayer answered some questions about this extraordinary league and how she got involved with the Texas Challenge.<br />Women's Sports Foundation: When did you start playing basketball?Kay Seamayer: I started playing in junior high. I played all through high school and in college. I stopped playing when I was 39 and turned to tennis.<br />WSF: When did you realize you wanted to play basketball again?KS: I was sedentary from my job, and I wanted to get my body into shape. I ran into Tausha Mills, former WNBA player, at the gym. She was rehabbing her knee, and it was my second time at the gym. I said to her, “You are rehabbing your knee while I am rehabbing my body.” She later became my personal trainer and got my body back into shape.<br />WSF: How did you hear about the Texas Challenge?KS: I got a pamphlet and I saved it for about a year until I knew I was ready to play. When I got in contact with the league they had five players. We started to do publicity and got more and more players.<br />"I think this is going to be a national movement. This league is empowering to women. It will put a new face on seniors and people won’t look at senior as being old."<br />WSF: Is this a five-on-five league?KS: We play three-on-three. We have two leagues within the one big league both called the Texas Challenges. One league is for 65+ women and the other is for 85+ women. There is one woman on the team that is 91. Both teams are going to the 2007 Senior Olympics in Louisville.<br />WSF: Do you feel that this league has made you more physically fit?KS: It is great we are using basketball as a fitness program. It makes me feel that I need to be ready physically for the next 30 to 40 years.<br />WSF: What is the main objective of the league?KS: We gave our earlier lives to our family. I tell the players, “The minute you step on the court you are not someone’s mother, wife or best friend; you are a basketball player. You are an individual.” We can prove everyone wrong, we want to be active and live out our passion. We talk trash and expect everyone to play to her maximum ability. I really want to champion other women and bring them into the game.<br />WSF: What do you think this league will do for seniors in years to come?KS: I think this is going to be a national movement. This league is empowering to women. It will put a new face on seniors, and people won’t look at senior as being old.<br /><a title="http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/cgi-bin/iowa/sports/gogetfit/find1.html" href="http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/cgi-bin/iowa/sports/gogetfit/find1.html" target="_blank"></a><br /><br />In 2000, April Heinrichs became the first female head coach of the U.S. National Women's Soccer Team.<br /><br /><a title="http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/cgi-bin/iowa//sports/article.html?record=" href="http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/cgi-bin/iowa//sports/article.html?record=80" target="_blank">Women's Sports in the News</a><br /></div><a title="http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/cgi-bin/iowa/about/serv/speaker_list.html" href="http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/cgi-bin/iowa/about/serv/speaker_list.html" target="_blank"></a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7445506831180060227-870761062752899449?l=www.kayseamayer.com%2Fteamannounce.htm' alt='' /></div>Kayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057725588702527748kayseamayer@msn.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445506831180060227.post-39666686702376808172008-03-21T10:49:00.000-07:002008-03-21T11:26:58.679-07:00ESPN Sports Radio - Galloway and Company ...Shaun Dodge, producer - Discuss BF Senior Women's Performance at Mavs Gameposted by: Kay Seamayer....March - 2008....<br /><br />On March 11, 2008, our team's Dallas Mavericks exhibition introduction and performance was discussed on ESPN Sports Radio by Galloway and friends.. and Shaun Dodge...producer of the show. Shaun had some rather "catty" remarks to make about us "old ladies" out there trying to play bb or something similar.. A friend told me about it.. so I wrote Shaun an email giving him an "ear full" for making fun of us grannies .....and that he should be so lucky to be able to shoot and run and jump and play bb when he was OUR AGE. I then challenged him, Randy Galloway, or anyone else on the show or at ESPN to a 3 point shootout!!..... to prove that us "old ladies" .... well, "this old lady at 68"...could outshoot him any day, any time!!<br /><br />Below are excerpts from an email reply I received from Shaun, the producer of the show... After reminiscing about sinking shots when they were younger, Whitlock asked Keith if she would like to play on a women's basketball team that she was starting in Dallas.<br />Keith's childhood dream sputtered to life.<br />Keith, 73, took her 67-year-old friend, Rachel Snider, a late-blooming athlete, with her to games in Dallas. Soon after they started playing, the women met another senior athlete, Nellene Pittman, 81, who they invited to join the team.<br />Today, the women are scheduled to play in the Texas Challenge Invitational Playday Tournament in Dallas.<br />"It's wonderful," Snider said. "We're reliving a dream, but definitely not moving as fast."<br />Keith, Snider and Pittman are the belles of senior women's basketball in San Antonio. They belong to the Texas Challenge, a women's senior basketball league that features a division for women 65 and older and one for women 85 and older. They regularly drive 100 miles to Burnet to practice. And in the off-season, they play several sports at the Jewish Community Center and attend Senior Olympic games.<br />Earlier this fall, the trio took part in a basketball clinic for seniors at Woodlawn Lake Park. Representatives from the Parks and Recreation Department asked Damon Bailey, who played professional basketball in Iceland, to run the clinic. Bailey said the workshop was offered in response to San Antonio being marked as the top city for obesity in some national polls.<br />"It was a blessed opportunity for me," Bailey said. "I learned so much working with an 81-year-old lady. I have no excuse at 26 years old. It's a motivation to see a lady double my age. It's an inspiration."<br />The women joined several other participants, stretching and doing yoga exercises before running through two hours of drills. They practiced lay-ups, free throws and passing the ball while running down court.<br />Off the court, to stay in shape, the women watch what they eat and stay active. Pittman plays tennis and volleyball in city and church leagues. Snider runs 25 miles a week and has completed a few marathons. Keith keeps in shape by playing tennis.<br />They said their biggest supporters are their relatives, who buy them athletic gear for Christmas. They've drawn standing ovations while displaying their basketball skills at WNBA games for the San Antonio Silver Stars and Houston Comets.<br />They want other seniors to see that there isn't anything unusual about playing sports at their age. Their goal now is to gather enough players to form a senior women's basketball team in the Alamo City.<br />"We need people to come join us," Snider said. They should "not be afraid if (they) can't make a basket. They'll learn."<br />vtdavis@express-news.net<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7445506831180060227-3538394465967975248?l=www.kayseamayer.com%2Fteamannounce.htm' alt='' /></div>Kayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057725588702527748kayseamayer@msn.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445506831180060227.post-29294744491107937982007-11-01T05:29:00.000-07:002007-11-01T05:40:42.784-07:00WFAA - NEWS - VIDEO - TEXAS CHALLENGECheck out the news item and VIDEO on the following link<br />featuring TEXAS CHALLENGE: by: Jake Batsell<br /><br /><a href="http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/city/northdallas/stories/DN-grannyhoopsters_15cco.ART.North.Edition1.4451886.html">http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/city/northdallas/stories/DN-grannyhoopsters_15cco.ART.North.Edition1.4451886.html</a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7445506831180060227-2929474449110793798?l=www.kayseamayer.com%2Fteamannounce.htm' alt='' /></div>Kayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057725588702527748kayseamayer@msn.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445506831180060227.post-35991694202824943632007-10-25T18:33:00.000-07:002007-10-31T06:19:29.499-07:00Seamayer/Senior Women's Basketball - Dallas Morning News - neighborsgo - by Loyd BrumfieldPlease click on this link to read article.<br /><br /><a href="http://neighborsgo.com/stories/6350">http://neighborsgo.com/stories/6350</a><br /><br /><br />Please click on this link to see video:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.neighborsgo.com/video/344">http://www.neighborsgo.com/video/344</a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7445506831180060227-3599169420282494363?l=www.kayseamayer.com%2Fteamannounce.htm' alt='' /></div>Kayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04057725588702527748kayseamayer@msn.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445506831180060227.post-22056551807187516812007-10-16T22:08:00.001-07:002007-10-18T09:22:36.403-07:00BASKETBALL...Much more than just a sport....TC All Stars on trip to St. George, Utah - Huntsman World Senior Games<a href="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/HUNTSMAN----ST.-GEORGE-07-068-767121.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/HUNTSMAN----ST.-GEORGE-07-068-766391.jpg" border="0" /></a> Checking out the sights and sounds of the Las Vegas strip!<br /><br /><div><a href="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/HUNTSMAN----ST.-GEORGE-07-070-715169.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.kayseamayer.com/uploaded_images/HUNTSMAN----ST.-GEORGE-07-070-714515.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>Scenic beauty of Zion National Park - Utah</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;">Having the opportunity to play senior basketball is not JUST about "playing basketball and fitness"..... it's about much more... </span><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;">On our recent trip to compete in the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah (where our team won GOLD in 3 on 3) we hand a chance to get to know one another... to embrace and celebrate the lives of our team mates... to laugh, to giggle...to act silly...to share and enjoy our life stories with one another.... and it was magic...</span></div><br /><div><span style="font-size:85%;">We all stayed in a two bedroom suite and were together for five full days. We all flew out very early from DFW Airport together... got in to Las Vegas around 8 am.. on Oct. 11, picked up our mini van.. and drove to St. George, Utah. On the way, we "did" the strip in Las Vegas.... ooooohing and ahhhhhing over all the cool stuff</span><br /></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;">we saw... but kept going until we reached our destination of St. George. What a beautiful drive </span><span style="font-size:85%;">of approx. 150 miles from LV to St. George. Our next two days were spent competing in the tournament... which was a blast! (It's always fun to win the GOLD) </span></div><div></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;">After our basketball play was over... we took off the next day and drove up to Zion National Park where we spend the day. We wore our gold medals and were stopped and contratulated by many other athletes participating in the Games who were also at Zion National Park that day.. Everyone was so thrilled for us... and it gave us a chance to met and talk with other athletes about their particular sport and competition. We met many fun people on that mountain path and area that day....everyone quick to share their own stories. There were many foreign visitors also enjoying Zion who seemed to really enjoy our "story"..... They could not believe we were 65+ still competing on that level of basketball! </span></div><div></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;">We had packed all the food and drink in the refrigerator and took with us. After our fantastic tour through beautiful Zion National Parkm we were hungry, AGAIN! We discovered a beautiful small park with several picnic tables alongside a cold water mountain stream......and yes, the water was ice cold! We chose a picnic table at water's edge under a huge tree which had begun to display its beautiful gold and orange fall colors..... We spread a variety of food out on the table and ate as thought we had not eaten in three days.... enjoying the sound of the fast running brook and the rustling of the leaves in a soft fall breeze (about 65 degrees) - sunshine - pristine setting... What a day God had made!!! We even had a visit from a small squirrel looking for a handout.... We quite readily and willingly accommodated him with fruit and nuts. It was a glorious day...and a glorious time for us to all enjoy being together... all trying to just wrap our minds eye around all that beauty and serenity.</span></div><div></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;">Finally, we dragged ourselves away from that experience......back in the car to reality. It seemed that we had all been touched by the beauty of this moment..of this whole day with the surroundings of the mountains.. the blue skies...the color in the leaves announcing that winter was near...</span></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;"></span></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;">Next day found us driving back to Las Vegas where we took in sounds and sights on the stip... turned our car in...and finally boarded our plan to return to Dallas..
